Tips For Memorizing Scripture

01

Just Do One Verse

Don't start with a whole chapter. Pick one verse, review it every day, and when it starts to stick, add another.

02

Start With Verses You Already Know

You probably already have a few verses half-memorized, like John 3:16, Genesis 1:1, the Lord's Prayer, Psalm 23, or Romans 8:28.

Add them to your memory list and start reviewing. You'll have a head start, and you'll be ruminating on Scripture from day one.

03

Make It A Daily Habit

Pick something you already do every day and use it as a reminder to review your verses. It could be after breakfast, when you brush your teeth, before bed, or even before you open social media.

04

Memorize Verses That Matter To You

Start with verses that already mean something to you. There's no need to memorize just for the sake of memorizing. You probably don't need to start with the genealogies.

05

Memorize Verses About Memorizing

It's hard to stick with something if you're not convinced it matters. If you need to convince yourself, start by memorizing these verses.

"This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night..."

Joshua 1:8 BSB

"I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You."

Psalm 119:11 BSB

06

Pray For The Desire

God can change your desires if you ask him.

"For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose."

Philippians 2:13 BSB

07

Use A Tool

A good system makes it easier to stay consistent. Ruminate keeps track of the verses you're memorizing and tells you what to review next, so you don't have to figure it out yourself.

08

Review Daily

The point isn't to memorize a verse and move on. It's to keep ruminating on God's truth every day.

Every review brings Scripture back into your mind, even if you still need the app or can't recite a verse perfectly. You're still feeding on God's Word, so keep reviewing.

09

Engage Multiple Senses

Try saying your verses out loud, typing them, listening to them, or writing them with pen and paper. You can even sing them, rap them, or draw them if you want.

The more ways you engage with a verse, the better it'll stick.

10

Use Your Verses In Real Life

Use any excuse to rehearse the verses you're memorizing. Bring them up in conversation, use them when praying for yourself or others, and encourage someone else to memorize Scripture with you.

And don't be afraid of getting a verse wrong in front of someone. Laugh it off and keep going.

Start Today

Just do one verse. Add it to Ruminate, review it today, and come back tomorrow.
